About the Artist

Barbara K. Riering graduated from Georgetown University with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Foreign Service in 1978. She received her Juris Doctor degree from Fordham University in 1982. She has also studied law at the Universite de Paris and piano at the Manhattan School of Music.

A love of handwork has been a major part of Barbara’s life since the age of 9 when her mother and grandmother taught her how to knit and do embroidery.  Since 1989, she has chosen to make her livelihood in the world of fiber arts. Her work has taken her from design to teaching to ownership of a needlepoint store in New York City.

Barbara’s current body of work arises largely from her meditation practice.  It is in the stillness of sitting that she has been able to find and connect with her inner voice. Her work expresses her belief in the interdependence and oneness of all in nature. Her world contains both a bold riot of color and extreme simplicity. Above all, it evokes a sense that all we are looking for is right here in the present moment.

Barbara currently resides and works in Manhattan.
